Some interesting environments that highlight what an interesting time it is to be a developer…
The Open Cloud Platforms of heroku , Morph Labs and Aptana Cloud now offer developers access to not only PAAS ( Platform as a Service) where one doesn’t need to worry about setting up an infrastructure but also tools for development (such as Aptana Studio that has full integration with Aptana Cloud) and open source languages (Ruby in the case of Heroku and Morph Labs).
Heroku and Morph are based on Amazon’s EC2 and S3 virtual infrastructure – so in essence you are using cloud computing which in turn is also based on further cloud computing.
Salesforce is a custom cloud platform since it’s APEX and VisualForce langauges are proprietary. This could be viewed as a disadvantage compared with the open-source offrerings above, but Salesforce does have the wide-spread adoption and they have been improving their platform continuously. Now with Force.com Sites, Salesforce is really opening up their platform to more developers.
Stay tuned for more articles and links as these developments (pun intended) keep thing interesting for developers and all businesses.
